Our New Premium Collection

Words by Kate Finnigan

This season, we set out to challenge the rules that define ‘the classics’. The result? A boundary-pushing capsule collection crafted from the finest fabrics and imbued with a deliberate twist.

Designed for the every day (but never ordinary), our new premium collection is timeless, but still weaves everything that makes Anthropologie ‘Anthro’ into its finer details. Bold colour flashes from coat linings, clashing cuffs decorate knits and classically tailored trousers are spun from unexpected fabrics.

The collection is already finding fans in high places too. Here, fashion editor Kate Finnigan – contributor at The Telegraph, Vogue and The Financial Times to name a few – discusses her evolving relationship with the clothes she wears, investment over infatuation, and the reason she believes she’s found a lifelong companion in our new premium collection.

“Recently, I’ve been thinking about the parallels between the clothes I choose to wear and my romantic relationships, and how much both have changed with time.

“I’ve had my flirty, quick flings with clothes: short-lived, unsuitable obsessions. I’ve fallen for flighty fabrics and prints that weren’t really me, had one-night stands with tricky cuts and, to be honest, I’ve come to realise that it’s all just not my bag anymore. These days, I find myself looking for something more. I want long-term, well-loved and meaningful clothes that are going to go the distance with me.

twist
The pieces I buy now are investments in flattering silhouettes and beautiful fabrics. I need them in my wardrobe, not because they’re ‘the thing’ to wear this week or this season, but because I’ll still be fond of them in years to come. Let me point out that it’s not that I love fashion any less, I just view these choices as a reflection of how I want to live my life for the foreseeable future. That’s probably why I find myself falling for Anthropologie’s new premium collection.

“It’s a range of 16 classic pieces with all the qualities I’m looking for – tailored coats and separates that I can work into multiple looks, knitwear for layering and dresses that will go from day to night. The fabrics are top notch too For a brand that has always avoided throwaway trends in favour of artisan-influenced clothes, it makes sense to have a spin on the classics.

twist
“For decades now, since I first discovered Anthropologie while in America, I’ve gone in store and felt swoony at all the heart-lifting colour and patterns. So on first look it’s a slightly cleaner and more directional feel for the brand. But the unique artistic flamboyance is all there in the detail of these seemingly straightforward pieces.

“Find Anthropologie’s signature flourishes in an 100% silk shirt sandwashed to an ultra-soft finish, a tobacco-hued robe coat with colour-contrast buttons, and a technically intricate roll-neck jumper, knitted circularly to avoid side seams. It’s all effortless to style too. A neat cashmere-and-wool-blend coat – complete with a slim shawl collar – will look the business over a blouse, cropped trousers and loafers. Pair a ‘70s-inspired velvet devore dress over leather boots by day, or with AW19’s take on the Mary Jane for dancing.

The collection is full of keepers: classic pieces with a spark of personality that’ll stick around for some time. I think we could all fall hard for that.
