Welcome to The House:

Soho Home x Anthropologie

Words by Leanne Mascoll Wheaton

When restaurateur Nick Jones launched Soho House in 1995 it transformed the hospitality landscape. Up until this point, London’s private members scene had been a rather formal affair dominated by stuffy gentleman’s clubs but Jones’ Soho House 40 Greek Street had no plans to follow suit.

Shunning a predictable Mayfair location, Soho House positioned itself at the heart of London’s burgeoning creative scene, providing a home-away-from-home for artists, writers and makers. Beyond its coveted doors a unique atmosphere unfolded, where hard work was balanced by an equally play-hard attitude. 24 years and 23 Houses later Soho House has taken its own brand of creative-cool from Amsterdam to Mumbai.

The launch of Soho Home in 2016 made the brand’s signature aesthetic accessible for the first time, inviting members and non-members alike to “bring the House home”. The Soho Home x Anthropologie collaboration pushes this concept further, drawing inspiration not only from the vintage furniture curation that can be found in its Houses, but also using the architectural nuances of each building as muses.

Focusing on Soho House 40 Greek Street, the historic townhouse where this journey started, and Soho House Barcelona, an 18th century jewel in the city’s Gothic Quarter, the 80-piece collection represents a meeting of creative minds, and also marks Soho Home’s first ever collaboration. Covering everything from glassware and textiles to statement furniture, it fuses the aesthetics both Anthropologie and Soho House love – vintage-modern silhouettes, bold colour, and lots of texture.

We caught up with Adam Daghorn, senior homeware designer at Anthropologie and one of the creative minds behind the collaboration, to get a closer look at the Houses’ influence on each item.

“The architecture at 40 Greek Street is stunning – it’s full of beautiful 1920s Art Deco archways. We referenced these on the gently sloping edges of our Mariana Bed’s frame.”

“This mid-century-inspired desk is based on an antique we came across at Soho House Barcelona. Matching different vintage pieces can be aesthetically tricky, so we cleaned the silhouette up and ensured the oak was an exact match for all of the other pieces in the collection.”

“The idea for the Santiago Leather Sling Chair came after we saw this antique “Spanish Chair” by the renowned designer Børge Mogensen in the Barcelona House. The armrests are cantilevered by the frame and the weight of the user, and are specifically designed so your elbows rest perfectly on each arm. It’s a very Anthro spin on a classic.”

“The Adriana Chair is based on a sculptural seat we spotted in the Barcelona House. We’ve taken its silhouette and then pushed it further, making the curves more exaggerated and adding brass banding between each channel tuft in a nod to the opulent excess of Catalan’s Modernisme movement.”
