Personal Styling: Two-Step Party Outfits

A good dress tends to be our party plus-one from now until New Year’s Eve. While their credentials make a compelling case (simple, stylish, easy to wear, we could go on), we must confess they’ve become somewhat of a soiree comfort blanket. So while our trustiest frocks will put in an appearance or two, we’ve declared 2015 the year we move beyond the party dress, bringing our less-frequented companions into rotation: separates. Our personal stylist—you know Holly, right?—has turned her hand to making separates work for any festive gathering, spinning three spirited pairings that’ll slip into your everyday wardrobe beyond the New Year countdown. Holly, we’re all eyes and ears.

  • “If separates fall outside of your party comfort zone then a traditional skirt is a good place to start. This full-circle iteration has the fit and flare of a classic dress, but the ability to swap your top in and out adds a layer of versatility. Try a shimmer tee for a finish that isn’t overly polished.”

  • “Every girl deserves her Sandy moment and this one comes just in time Christmas! I can guarantee you’ll wear these faux-leather leggings again and again post party season, but for the next month give them a lift by pairing them with a gold-trimmed tunic and fur clutch—practical and decadent.”

  • “A maxi skirt might might seem like an unusual choice for winter gatherings, but their easy to wear and will make a dramatic statement. Opt for cold-fighting materials with eye-catching motifs, like this brocade version, and top with a soft cashmere jumper for added warmth.”
