It’s time to primp your pine

We often sit and ponder the wondrous ways of our visual team – how do they dream up the most magical Christmas windows, before taking ordinary materials and transforming them into whimsical decor? Consider this an early yuletide treat– a step-by-step on how to emulate their brilliance on your very own tree, with the help of cardboard feathers and bows, birch bark, and a dusting of glitter!

Bow's and Feathers Tree Decorations

For the bows

What you’ll need:
  • birch bark
  • canvas
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun
  • brads (gold fasteners)
  • hole punch
  • gold leaf kit
How they’re made:
  1. Use the diagram above to cut one bow body, two tails and a centre from the birch bark, canvas or a mix of both.
  2. Use the hole punch to cut holes in the bark or canvas as shown.
  3. Following the instructions on your gold leaf kit, apply gold leaf to each bow element as desired.
  4. Stack the elements together and fasten with a brad.
  5. Wrap the bow centre around the spot where you secured the brad and hot glue in place to hide the brad.

For the feathers

What you’ll need:
  • Natural feathers
  • Glue
  • Paint brush
  • Rock salt
  • Glitter
  • Birch bark
  • Silver leaf kit
How they’re made:
  1. Feather dipped in rock salt: Brush glue all over the feather. Pour rock salt onto a plate or dish and dredge the feather through to adhere. Let dry.
  2. Feather with glitter tips: Brush glue only on the tips of the feather. Pour glitter onto a plate or dish and gently dredge the glued part of the feather to adhere. Let dry.
  3. Birch bark feather with silver leaf: Trace a feather shape on birch bark and cut out. Use the silver leaf kit to apply sections with leaf as desired.
  4. Feather sprinkled with glitter: Lightly brush a feather with white glue and sprinkle glitter over it to adhere. Shake off excess and let dry.
  5. Birch bark feather dipped in rock salt: Cut out a birch bark feather and brush the tip with glue. Dredge through a plate of rock salt and let dry.
