Steady and grounding. That’s the presence Bonnie Crotzer exuded as she began class. Taking place at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the dancer, yoga instructor, and founder of The Floss (a fascia work method), curated and led a fascia-focused meditation class for ten editors to honor the power of Daily Practice, our leisurewear label. Each moment revealed a deeper connection, drawing everyone further into the experience.
“Let the bod breathe!”
The Daily Practice collection is made up of pieces that emphasize ease of movement. Think: flowing silhouettes and materials that feel light as air (have you tried the Everest fabric?!). Bonnie put it perfectly: “Let the bod breathe! Feeling comfortable in your own skin and clothes is sexy and beautiful.” That mindset was woven into each piece, so you look and feel your best from brunches on the weekends to yoga in the park – or, in this case, under the skylight of a greenhouse.
In an era where personal style reigns supreme, we were curious how Bonnie defines her own. "In three words? Comfortable, simple, and elegant. Through simplicity, you can celebrate the body’s natural lines and curves.” She further described her growing preference for loose clothing over tight, emphasizing comfort.
And at once, everything was aligned. This harmony resonated throughout the space, where a blend of relaxed elegance was evident, from the moss-covered floor to the serene green yoga mats that adorned the room.
“The right kind of support.”
Growing up, Bonnie’s exposure to dance helped her to “develop a deep reverence and boundless curiosity for how our bodies are an expression of our souls and vice versa.” When asked to explain her daily practice (dancing), Bonnie lit up. “It's like riding the best wave of your life. When I’m in my flow state, I feel like time is relative. I’m completely embodied and out of body all at once.”
There was a meditative quality to the way she guided class, making it easy for everyone to follow her lead, but most importantly, relax. As the sunlight filtered in gently, the hanging sculpture above created a dance of chiaroscuro on the floor.
Informed by her years of movement and its effects on her body, Bonnie founded The Floss in order to create a community where a low-impact, resistance-based movement routine could radically change lives. “It’s gratifying to find your niche and use it to serve the needs of your community. It fuels me to accomplish the nitty-gritty things. Also, calling in the right kind of support in the right moments has been key.”
“A grand communication matrix within us.”
Curious about what fascia flossing involves? We’ll let Bonnie explain. “Fascia flossing is the act of maintaining contraction through your muscles and fascia while simultaneously moving them into an elongation phase.”
Bonnie continued on a deeper level: “I consider fascia a spiritual tissue in the body that links us to the outside world and the energy around us. It's a grand communication matrix within us.”
Interested in flossing from the comfort of your home or are simply in need of some spine-indulging movement? Bonnie provided instructions for a technique you can do each day, the upper-body floss:
1. Start on all fours with knees under hips and forearms on the floor so elbows are right under shoulders. Forearms should make a number 11, meaning they’re parallel and palms are pressing down.
2. Tuck your toes under, and slowly pull your hips back to hover over your heels. Arms will straighten and (without moving them) feel like you're dragging your elbows back toward your knees.
3. Slowly pull yourself forward, lifting hips, moving through all fours, and pushing your shoulders toward your elbows.
4. Repeat rocking back and forth, 10 to 20 reps.Together we move, together we grow.
“Having a daily practice centers me, reconnects me to my essence, opens me up to the world, supports me in releasing the unnecessary, and aligns me with powers greater than myself,” Bonnie said.
Together we move, together we grow. Exploring Bonnie's practice was a journey of self-discovery, leaving us feeling 'internally exfoliated.' What will yours be? Start today and find the transformative power of your own daily practice.
