I really wanted to like this book. The illustrations are beautiful, and evince a wonderful attention to detail. I wanted to give this book to my daughter for Christmas but after looking through it, there is no way I'm giving her this book. But we are Korean-American and there is no map for South Korea in the book. On the world map, it's just - blank. I just don't feel comfortable giving her something that sends the message that - for whatever reason - the county of her heritage just didn't make the cut vis a vis the rest of the world. In addition, most of Africa is a complete blank, which I find disturbing. Way to devalue almost an entire continent. The fact that the countries that *are* included are treated in such loving detail begs the question - did the illustrators feel that there just wasn't enough interesting material in these other countries to warrant the same amount of attention? What am I supposed to tell my daughter? That Korea just didn't stack up to the other Asian countries, so it was just left out?

This book is beautiful and sweet. The artists capture unique aspects of all these countries. It is also massive! I enjoyed covering the name of the country and quizzing my siblings on the countries based on each map and it's people/places/things.
It must be said that this IS NOT an exhaustive review of every country in the world. The other review is upset that Korea was not included. True. Neither are about half the other countries in the world.
If you're interested in this book for a specific country (Guatemala, Israel, Ireland, Korea, etc), you may be disappointed. If you just love geography, culture and art, you will be very pleased.

I purchased this book for my grandchildren, who love detailed drawings and maps.
Well, it is still at MY house....I cannot quit looking at it! An interesting and charming way to learn about the world. (it will be moving on soon!)
